Agree, TG. I wasn't making a value judgement on those other kinds of bets. I was just recommending a "keep it simple" approach to start with.

rich eng's "Betting on Horse Racing of Dummies" is good for racing terms.

i'm still learning so this helped me greatly!

Go to Turfpedia.com..I think James Quinn is involved over there. Lots of good, basic information that will get you started in the right direction.
