Derby winner Habibi back on track

4 June 2014, 9:32 a.m.

New Zealand Derby winner Habibi will make her North American debut on Thursday. Trained by Dan Blacker for new owner George Strawbridge, she will step out in a fillies’ and mares’ event over 1600 metres at Santa Anita where she will be opposed by five rivals. Formerly prepared by Dean and Donna Logan to win six of her nine starts, Habibi hasn’t raced since she suffered a fractured hind pastern when fourth in the Australian Oaks. The daughter of Ekraar underwent lengthy rehabilitation in New South Wales before she transferred to hew current California base. Her short-term aim is the Grade One Santa Anita Gold Cup on June 28.
