Understand that I am not very knowledgeable about training/working horses, but is this type of accident common?? Seems very dangerous for both animal and human.
Well, as the sportscasters like to say, it's the only sport where an ambulance follows the athletes over the course. But I don't think it's a common occurrence.

Horses are big animals and at full speed that's a lot of mass going forward at a great rate. As people said in the wake of Paul Walker's death- it's not the speed that does the damage; it's the sudden stop.
