I wish Pierre had better power(like Furcal,) but if you get 200 hits, play 162 games, and get 58 stolen bases, then you are a valuable player.I'D SAY THAT BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF POWER,They did pay a little too much to Pierre. You have to remember that the Dodgers gave Kent 10 mil last year, and only got 14 bombs. So,we are use to guys ripping us off.Again, that was caused by injuries(played just 115 games.)I think getting a guy that plays 162 games, and gets over 200 hits is pretty valuable.Old guys with power are risky.
He get 195 singles, turns some of them into doubles but also turns a lot into outs. A guy on baseball prospectus put it best. He said that Pierre is a typical 70's style player, slap hitter, speed, etc. except that does not translate well into the way the modern game is played. Eventually all those 162 game seasons will start to take effect and guys who only have one asset, speed, are the ones that lose it quicker than any others. Plus his defense is mediocre and his arm is awful. If he could walk 40 times more and steal 80 bases he may be close to worth the contract despite the defense but is he really any better than Kenny Lofton for a whole lot more $$$. Not that Sarge,jr is worth what he is getting but he is a much better defensive player and has much more power than Pierre. Dodgers would have been better off holding on to the money.
