"Conservative" in the USA as represented by the GOP is fractured and destroyed. There is the John Birch Society types, the Pat Robertson/Rick Santorum religious zealots; then the Libertarians who don't want to be associated with those loons.
The "moderate and intellectual conservatives" (Colin Powell, etc) have abandoned and call themselves independents. Jeb Bush is hanging on to the party, but he see's what is going down, as does Condi Rice.
The Republican Party brand is now a shell corporation owned by Romney-Adelson-Koch types. Citizens United was a big step in that.
The Libertarians and Paulites have figured it out. They won't play with that GOP any more. That's good for the country.
Best hope in my eyes for a strong two-party system is if the Libertarians/Paulites create a new strong party to replace the current shell corporation.
They need votes, though, so that puts the religious loons back up for grabs, being fought over by the shell corp and the Libertarians.

The threats of violence are coming from the Obama-hating far right. Seriously, I'm more worried about violence when he wins.
And I say "when", because I don't see any road for Romney to purchase 270 electoral votes at this time. But anything can happen.
