from my experience, they are also usually the ones who are screaming "THEY WANT ME TO HAVE THAT FOUR HOSS! THEY WANT ME TO HAVE THAT FOUR HOSS" as the 2/5 shot comes thundering down the stretch in a 5-horse claimer at calder and then jump up and down and boast about how THEY "KNEW IT!"
Their losing tickets slammed on the table next to you are usually $2 win tickets on the chalk -- so I would imagine that they make up a small percentage of the actual totals.
Though in a place like Portland, OR when I was hanging out at Portland Meadows -- a couple of action junkies with $5 win wagers can at times early in the card mean the difference between 7-1 and 5-2 on your horse

so it's all relative haha
