The jockey was obviously trying to win.

It happened to Shoemaker in the Derby and Desormeaux in the Japan Cup.

I suppose you could always put up numbers next to the poles every 1/8th of a mile like some foreign tracks do... like a 3 next to the 3/8th pole and a 2 next to the 1/4 pole and a 1 next to the 1/8th pole.

I always assumed those foreign places did that to help the fans and bettors out because a lot of the meetings are so short and the courses are often oddly shaped.
