Thankfully, at least in the US, it's a very small number. In Chicago there are more people murdered in a day than the homeless who die of hypothermia in a year. Of course Chicago does an excellent job with warming shelters and actually going out and finding the homeless.

I hope the millions and millions who receive heating and housing subsidies in this country are appreciative.

Compared to the rest of the world we should be proud!

While a majority of the poor in the world battle starvation, the poor in the US battle obesity.

Again, sometimes one needs to stop and smell the roses. We are blessed/lucky to live in this country, (especially the poor).
