actually it's trickier than that...EVH1 can remain in a latent (dormant) state in a carrier horse for a indefinite amount of time...only to be triggered by some stress or other illness...it's estimated that the virus may be present in 50% of adult horses...but the question of where and when it might become active is not easily answered.
