it's usually framed as a national security issue by republican's and a national security and environmental issue by democrats.
and it's quickly followed by an offer of cheap gas if you'd only elect them.
why? because they know their audience. no politician ever lost an election by underestimating the maturity or intelligence of the american voter.
any politician that tried to explain the long term benefits of $4-$5/gal gas would finish behind the transvestite-communist party candidate.
