Shocking out of Australian Cup 12 Mar 2010
By Rob Burnet
The Group One Darley Australian Cup (2000m) markets were thrown into disarray once again with the news late on Friday afternoon that the 2009 Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Shocking will not take his place in Saturday’s field at Flemington.
The Mark Kavanagh trained four-year-old Street Cry entire has had a recurrence of the hoof abscess that appeared last week, meaning that the horse was unable to take his place in the race which was subsequently postponed due to the severe storm that passed over Flemington.
With the Australian Cup and the Crown Guineas rescheduled for this Saturday at Flemington on Blamey Stakes Day the stable re-nominated Shocking for the field on Tuesday, however on Friday morning the hoof abscess problem flared again.
Kavanagh advised Racing Victoria Ltd stewards of the problem and that Shocking will be scratched from the field.
Kavanagh advised in a statement that Shocking will most likely be spelled and then be prepared for a spring campaign.
Shocking has run twice since his Melbourne Cup win last spring, being unplaced in both the CF Orr Stakes and St George Stakes over unsuitable distances.
