2/14: Santa Anita ($516k C/O)
Couldn't catch any meaningful multi wagers Saturday as even chalky Magna 5 play was felled in the anchor leg when the Santa Anita downhill course raised its' ugly head and produced $20 Dinnr With Nikki C. The sequence paid as small a return as I ever remember: $534.
Santa Anita, which now has a two day C/O topping $500,000, turned tough Saturday when Jeranimo upset Misremembered in the delayed Strub, and Cal-bred Caracortado stunned the heralded Sadler, Harty and Baffert entrants in the Bob Lewis. Even Blind Luck needed to summon all her class to get up past Evening Jewel in the Las Virgenes, which would have been the biggest shocker of the day.
Elsewhere, normalcy reigned for the most part as Rule dominated over-matched foes in the Sam Davis, coasting wire to wire and earning a solid 98 Beyer in the process. The result had to hearten Team WinStar, as the try by their American Lion at Arcadia was uninspiring. It was another good Saturday for Todd Pletcher though as the win by Rule was bookended across state when Munnings aced the GP Sprint Championship while Beyering 103.
And speaking of winning stakes on two coasts, Kays and Jays (Hurricane Bertie) and St. Trinians (Santa Maria H.) gave Mike Mitchell a pair of graded stakes 24 hours after a caller pointed out his dearth of GSW's on ATR. Mitchell had come into the day 1 for 33 in stakes with numbers on them over the last 18 months. Mitchell has a serious mare on his hands in St. Trinians, who has now won 4 straight in the U.S., and is expected to face off against Zenyatta next in the G1 Santa Margarita March 13.
Have to dig in the heels and go after the Santa Anita carry today... With $500k+ to start it, you can expect the pool to surge towards $3,000,000. The sequence is highlighted by a full and terrific field in G2 La Canada, the 4yo filly only contest that compliments yesterday's Strub Series finale. Hope you did well yesterday and continue to enjoy the Holiday Weekend. Big Monday "ATR" tomorrow with the Barbara Fritchie and Southwest Stakes live and recaps of the weekend with the principals!
