I'm not really sure why I choose two alternates really. Just something I've always done.
I usually split them up into horses I would have a bigger bet on and horses I'd limit to smaller stakes. If my big bet horse doesn't run, I often don't have much of an opinion on the race and therefore include a bigger priced runner as my main selection alternate, trying to maximise profit in a race I have no longer got a big interest in.
Yes, I spend far too much time studying for this (last week showed it doesn't help), but I want to keep hold of my crown!
