The Group I Lightning Stakes field is down to 11 runners after the race-morning scratching of two three-year-old fillies from the Flemington feature.
Breeding giant Coolmore’s purchase of exciting colt Starspangledbanner on Friday has resulted in the scratching of Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights from the David Hayes stable.
“There is nothing wrong with the filly,” Hayes’ assistant trainer Gary Fennessy said. “The owners just didn’t want her to run because they bought the other colt.
“David (Hayes) will assess where she will have her first-up run early next week. It’s a little disappointing but we still have another strong chance in the race.”
Hayes would be cranky as all gelati..He had been talking up IL's chance of winning this race.
I guess it all comes down to down to $....a dual G1 colt is far more valuable than a dual G1 filly.
Good luck to the previous owners..at $10m..they have had a huge ride and made some big $..see breeder Tony Santic was one of the owners. The mare was served by Redoute's back in September...will be worth a few shillings!
