As for the Cowboys, you are probably talking more the "bandwagon, never even been to Texas" fans more than true Dallas fans. That has been my experience, in good years and bad.

The vast majority of the Yankees titles were before most of their fans (or detractors) were born.
Virtually every Cowboy fan I have ever encountered was the type you described.
