Sea Pigeon was a USA-bred son of the French star Sea-Bird out of a Round Table mare. He was a SW at 2, but he went through an awkward patch, and perhaps was injured, from 3 to 6, during which he was gelded and sent over hurdles. After that he ran year 'round, winning staying handicaps in the flat season and winning major hurdle stakes in the winter season. His Ebor win was the highlight of his flat career (at 9); he then added two wins (at 10 and 11) in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Sea Pigeon had a half-brother (by Tom Rolfe) named Bowl Game who was a sterling stayer in the US - Gulfstream Park H-G1, Washington, D.C., International-G1, Turf Classic-G1, Man o' War S-G1, etc. It's too bad their dam produced only males, all 5 of her foals, and this stout female line is unavailable to 'stiffen' all of the speed line sires of today.
Susan who?
