Zenyatta is an amazing horse... the way she prances in the paddock, her visual and imposing presence... very cool. And her wins are very dramatic, very exciting.
Rachel Alexandra is brilliant and fast. She's running a lot, not ducking anybody and is capturing headlines.
If you wanted to get down to it and compare ability... well, Zenyatta barely beat a pretty weak horse today. She was a touch out of her element, which is fine. Rachel Alexandra is faster, has more tactical speed and when push comes to shove, probably better.
And we're kinda kidding ourselves a bit if we think a RA/Zen showdown is really going to do "much" for the sport. The average person knows about Rachel, the average person does not know about Zenyatta. Racing fans know about Zenyatta.

Its not bad timing or bad luck, is mismanagement in the game by the people who run it, thats nothing new and if anyone expects more they should find another sport to follow. If the leaders of socal had not mandated to install syn to yield to political pressure this would not have happened. If the Breeders Cup had not decided to run two years in a row at Santa Anita this would not have happened.
I agree with everything else you wrote.
