She was a tick faster than a maiden race a few races earlier and ran almost identical fractions and final time as the colts division later in the card. While there are those here that are much more qualified to discuss times, speed figures, etc. she didnt appear to run all that fast to warrant a 1.5 million dollar offer. While she is by a very hot sire, her female family is undistinguished. If she were to get hurt and never run or win again she is worth about 150k as a BM.

And there are very few fillies ever bought in the 3 million dollar range as yearlings.
Well Jess hit the bid and the industry now has 1.5 million more dollars invested into it. True there aren't a ton of 3 mil dollar gals sold as yearlings in 2009 but in 05 - 08 there were a few I think. What's the difference the hammer price is a joke anyway. The point isn't the 1.5mil its 1.5 for a runner vs. 1.5 for a dream. You know Chuck Jess has done OK overpaying in the past. Plus does it really friggin matter "IF" she was sold for 800k or 1.5 mil in the scheme of Jess Jacksons life in 2009? I know of a owner who sold a modestly bred filly to Lael for 1 mil plus after she won a non grade turf stakes. She has gone on to win a few Graded races and is a very nice runner. I am not sure it was a good deal or a bad deal for Lael I just know it was an offer that worked for both parties. Repping that Jess overpaid is easy today. the same way you can say a sports team overpays to try and win a championship by giving up more talented young players with bright futures for more established stars. Basically if the horse goes on to do well he didn't over pay a penny, and if the horse stinks he lost a little more then he should have. Who thought Curlin was Curlin when they paid 3 mil?
