Talk was that the switch to Pletcher was because the trainer wouldn't chuck the jock who thought it was a good idea to choke a horse who wanted to go faster. Old school fellow. Probably figured the jock learned something and wouldn't do it again. Not good enough for the new owners.
It is entirely possible that Ron just grew up some over the winter and started to settle down a bit, so he could use his talent to best effect. He really didn't want more than 9f, except around one turn, and when he stayed in his comfort zone, he could run with anybody.
I'm sorry that we won't have but a couple of crops from such a gritty and durable performer. I was quite fond of him.
