Wiener Walzer wins Deutsches Derby
By David Conolly-Smith6.40PM 5 JUL 2009

WIENER WALZER gave Gestut Schlenderhan its 18th victory in the Deutsches Derby during the century-and-a-half history of the great stud farm at Hamburg on Sunday.

It was a particularly poignant moment for connections as the owner, Baroness Karin von Ullmann, died little more than a month ago.

The 36-10 shot's victory was a triumph for the Swedish rider Fredrik Johansson who was winning the race for the second time in three years, each time on trainer Jens Hirschberger's second string.

Suestado, who started favourite, was well placed until approaching the straight but then dropped out and was eased by Adrie de Vries.

Ted Durcan finished fifth on Quo Dubai while Darryll Holland was eighth on Frantic Storm, Richard Hughes ninth on Egon and Frankie Dettori tenth of the 17 runners on Hansom.

Dettori, who was pressing the leaders entering the straight, said: Hansom is a nice colt but he needs soft ground."

Holland and Hughes were never nearer than midfield.

Quo Dubai was hampered at the start when Oriental Lion, who was drawn on the outside, reared as the gates opened and bumped Bolivia onto him.

Durcan settled Quo Dubai at the back and he was still last into the straight. His 52-1 mount then ran on up the outside to join several other outsiders in pursuit of Wiener Walzer.

That son of Dynaformer battled on to score by one and a quarter lengths from Sordino, Toughness Danon and Eliot, who were divided by two necks. Quo Dubai was two lengths further back.

Hirschberger, who also trained Adlerflug to win with Johansson up two years ago, said: "We have not discussed plans for the winner and we're still trying to find out what went wrong with Suestado."
