I think Cannon's point is most 3 pointers taken in the NBA are wide open 3's. Offenses are designed to get open shots. At any level, it is not advised to take contested long range shots. I agree with you. The argument seemed to be that made 3's are a result of who's on the floor, not on the fact that you're wide open.
