I forget who wrote or said this a number of years ago, but it has always stayed with me as a handicapping maxim as it has proven out. In advance of a BC Sprint where a major player was coming in off an extended break, the point was made by a capper or trainer that sprinters can perform at their best first race back without issue, as opposed to two turn horses who under most conditions, generally need a race to reach peak fitness.
