btw: just checked and alaska law is the the governor sets the date for a special election. that has to occur within 90 days of a vacancy.
some debate over whether she can make an interim appointment to fill the vacancy. the people that backed an initiative changing the way federal vacancies were handled in alaska say no, so the state would have only 1 senator until the special election.
any appointment she made would be challenged in hours. but regardless, if begich can't beat a convicted felon, he won't beat palin in a special election.
and she'd have to run. trading alaska governor for alaska senator is a no brainer.
