He would have needed a pacemaker in there, too. No closer is going to look good when the front-runner goes in 47 or 48 and change and the race becomes a sprint to the wire in which the leader(s) has a 5 length head start.

In the Coronation Cup this year, Soldier of Fortune had, in effect, TWO pacemakers - Song of Hiawatha set the pace from the start, with Macarthur a couple lengths behind him, even further clear of the rest. As Song of Hiawatha fell back to last, Macarthur kept up the gallop until the last furlong, when Soldier of Fortune and Youmzain collared him late. Macarthur is a quality 12f horse, having won the G3 Ormonde S before and the Hardwicke S (G2) after his Coronation Cup 3rd.

Why American owners and trainers don't use pacemakers much anymore is a mystery to me. It's bad enough that there are so few 10f races in play (why both on the SAME DAY?!?!?!), but to have them turned into slow-paced falsely-run contests is disspiriting. ANd why some of those jocks let is happen is another mystery.
