While Giant Chieftan is certainly not as talented as his connections believed he would be at one point in time, I think his struggles may have more to do with misplacement. You have a horse who was on his way to breaking his maiden in his debut before attempting to swing by the refreshment stand in mid-stretch way back in '06. He then ran a couple of good races as a 2YO and Stanley Hough thought he was a turf horse. Since then he has not even been in the money on the weeds, failing six times and once on Polytrack. In the time since he came back as a 3YO he has run on the dirt twice. He finished third in a N1X at GP before clearing that condition in his next start.
Now, all three of this guy's dirt races have come on wet tracks, so a fast track is still a new thing, but he might be a tad interesting in a race where Barrier Reef and Alaazo are going to burn a ton of money. Although I should say, I do think Barrier Reef can run, I guess we'll see.
