isn't that why they waited so long to patch it? to let whatever was in there out? surely he had some drainage. i know they said he had a bit of heat in there, so obviously something was going on.
if i remember correctly, it took a couple days after the belmont before they realized bid had an abcess-it was deep in his foot, and they had to drill and drain it.
i bet that's what they find here.
at any rate, too often people think a horse who has won by many is just so much better and is completely unbeatable, regardless of physical issues, surface questions, etc as we can see, that's not the case.
