You might be right. They were going very fast and that may have been the closest he could have been. But I have seen Gomez take horses much further back than they have ever been before if the pace is fast. He's not afraid to drop 15 lengths back if the pace is fast enough. Other riders might have tried to push that filly to try to keep her a little closer. Gomez was not asking the filly at all early on. In addition, he was smart to get her outside once they straightened away. Some of these guys would have tried to split horses and may not have made it through.
I've told you exactly what his style is. He tries to save ground around the turns and then he tries to swing outside at the top of the lane. That was your typical Gomez ride in the 7th race.
