It was maddening, it's so incredibly random just based on who managed to punch what numbers.

Man you couldn't be more right with this assesment. About two years ago, I played a pick 4 at Hawthorne and I hit with odds something like this....
5-1, 7-2, 8-1 and I singled a 6-1 morning line in the last leg. There were only TWO 6-1 morning line horses and I was torn between both. The payoff to the one I singled was about $800 which was THE LOWEST PAYOUT. The other 6-1? That payoff was $14,000 and, of course, IT WON. And, if that wasn't a kick in the teeth enough... my horse went off at 5-1 and the winner went off at 9-2.
