Grade 3 winner Chattahoochee War retired
by Pete Denk
Grade 3 winner Chattahoochee War has been retired after suffering a high suspensory injury while preparing for Friday’s $200,000 Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course.
The six-year-old War Chant horse won four times and finished second five times in 15 career starts, earning $553,416 for Amerman Racing Stable. The injury was discovered after he worked four furlongs at Keeneland on Sunday, said the Amerman’s consultant, Bob Feld.
Trained by Bobby Frankel, Chattahoochee War was a two-time stakes winner as a three year-old in 2005, when he won the $82,200 Hill Rise Stakes at Santa Anita Park and the $150,000 Central Bank Transylvania Stakes (G3) at Keeneland.
“He was a very talented racehorse,” Feld said. “He finished second to English Channel in the Virginia Derby (G3) and competed against the best horses of his generation. We’re hoping to reach a stud deal.”
Bred in Kentucky by Edmund J. Loder, Chattahoochee War is out of Grade 3 winner Buffalo Berry (Ire), by Sri Pekan. The Amermans purchased Chattahoochee War for $250,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale.
