Young teams will occassionally go on a good run, especially when playing in a league with no good teams. Has nothing to do with the character of the players on the team, just with how they were playing. When it came down to it though they got beat up on by the Red Sox with Manny Ramirez who has always been considered a clubhouse cancer yet has never actually adversely impacted his team.
