Yes, and this also true of horses who win off of long layoffs. That first race back usually tires them out a bit and they usualy need some time to recover. The exception to this rule would be if a horse wins under an absolute strangle-hold and isn't even close to being all out, like the way Bernardini won yesterday. That race wasn't much more than a workout. In a situation like that, it's alright if the horse comes back a little quicker.
