Girl,it's not working. These other countries have roughly the same or more doctors, and all except JAPAN have more nurses/1000 people. We spend about double what these countries do for healthcare/person.It's not due mainly to malpractice suits,or defensive medicine(maybe 9% of it is.)It's not due to people having to be on waiting lists to have surgeries(in the other countries.)It's due to being charged too much to pay for fancy cars, homes, boats, and bullshit for doctors and insurance executives. We are spending more and getting the same care,or worse. We have the highest infant mortality of any of these countries. What you don't have in these other countries are people losing every penny they ever had to pay for medical bills.None of the people in these countries have to file for bankruptcy/be foreclosed on because of their med insurance stopped paying for services after a couple months.

Country -doctors/1000 people

Australia 2.47

Canada 2.14

France 3.37

Germany 3.37

Japan 1.98

Sweden 3.28

UK 2.30

USA 2.56

We spend about 15%(or more) of our gdp on medical, and these other countries spend 8-11% on it. "The US currently (2007) has the most expensive health care of any OECD country and also has the highest percentage of costs paid privately.

Many economist point out the fact that the large majority of health care cost come from prescription drugs. More than 90% of prescription drug research on earth is done in the United States where patents are protected much more carefully and the intrusion of generics who simply copy another companies product with little of their own Research and Development is minimized. In effect, the United States subsidizes the advances in medicine for the rest of the world."
