I suppose this is just me, but it bothers me a bit when just anybody lowers the American flag to half-staff (for example, when a local town council member dies).
I mean, I know it's meant to honor the death of somebody locally, as a show of repect, but I was brought up that only the President or a state Governor could order the American flag lowered, and only for certain people - it's a sign of national distress.
Is this a silly overreaction?
