wouldn't work....for one, they have to be trained/taught how to breed, despite what it seems they dont really just know what they are doing....and from then out it's work, just like any other job....and of course most mares don't get in foal on one cover, so he would have to keep coming out of training to cover mares until his book was satisfied. and those are just the obvious reasons.
