What's in a name? More turnover if identity is revealed

In the era of globalisation, the Jockey Club might do well to investigate what can be done about ensuring that overseas punters are aware of the underlying identity of the horses on which they bet.
Particularly with reference to Europe and Australasia, the almost-routine name change horses receive when they arrive in Hong Kong for their new owners often serves to muddy the waters for players in foreign countries.
One good example from Monday's racing is Enthused, who was carving a very promising career as Let's Migrate in Melbourne, including defeat of a subsequent Group One performer at his final start.
Doubtless punters in Australia would be more encouraged to back the horse in his Hong Kong races knowing his previous name, but when they look on the field lists at the name Enthused, it means little to them.
And, of course, there are many, many other similar cases.
One suggestion is that since Hong Kong owners give their horses a Chinese name as well, they should not be allowed to alter the English name, but this column doesn't think that's very fair to owners who have spent significant money to buy the rights, including naming rights, to their horse. Perhaps field listings in other jurisdictions betting on Hong Kong should always carry the extra detail, ex-Let's Migrate (Australia) for example.
It's a small thing, but might add up to some turnover bucks in the commingling future.

It's not a small thing at all. I understand that the new owners pay a lot of money to get these different names, but for someone like myself who has followed a horse for two, three, maybe four years and then all of a sudden it has disappeared off the face of the planet. We don't always hear about horses that have been sold over there. I knew nothing about
Kalaman until he had already been out there a couple years.
I don't agree with it, but i know they have every right to do so. However, i do wish they would print their old names as well as their new ones. It would makes it much more appealing to the european racing fan, especially me who would love to follow Hong Kong racing but i don't know who is who out there of the ex european horses.
