Your so right, getting old does suck. I have a 25yr old QH gelding, ex racer. I try and try to keep him looking somewhat nice but I know I am fighting a losing battle. He has always been a very thin, long horse, not your typical QH to be sure. Not only that, he has been a cribber his whole life and now his top teeth are worn down completely. So he hasnt had far to fall to not look good and its getting harder and harder to see him like that. He is on Equine Senior which has been the best thing I have tried on him, but old age is tough. He has been a member of the family since he was a late yearling and it will be hard to see him go.
