No doubt about your assessment. It's a totally different track on these days, I especially remember the 2005 Derby Day when the rail was dead and cost Madcape Escapade and Afleet Alex IMO. It definitely pays to pay attention to the earlier races. Also, if you have a Steve Byk at the Breeders' Cup telling every DT'er that they shaved the inside and it's where you want to be never hurts.
