I don't know..I think I'd want my Derby winning gelding to go out in victory too. While still competitive he wasn't exactly winning very often. The constant criticism by others asking for his retirement had to get tiring after awhile too.
Personally I think it's good for the future of the sport (the children) to have Funny Cide Days and the like. One of my co-workers was dragged to the Jim Dandy by his daughter in order to see the Derby winner. Popular horses do have an impact on people...now the industry just has to find a clever way to get them to put money through the windows. Rags to Riches is proof that it is hard to market the sport on the laurels of one horse, but if you can get them there, it's a definite bonus.
