SUMWON'S BACKGROUND
I can get this information from Pat Hammond of Pont Street Stables in NY. The Pont St. crew owned and campaigned Molly as I've said, and they followed her closely after they sold her in foal for $230,000 in a mixed sale. She red-bagged that foal (MRLS) which I believe was by Silver Deputy.
I invited the Pont Streeters in to Dee Tee and only my friend, Animal Planet celebrity vet Dr. John Charos came aboard. I saw Moll run several times as I became friendly with the Stable, including an inadvertant stop at Laurel the day she won the Martha Washington in a gallop. Spent a fair amount of time near her at the Del Carroll shed as well, and while Sumwonlovesyou has many of her physical characteristics, she is nothing like her high strung dam.
'MOLLY'S' CAREER
Mysterious Moll, the 1998 Florida-bred of the Year, was an edgy, nervous horse as a runner and trainee. Pat Hammond had a pre-race routine with her that included placing wet diapers on top her shoulders and hind end to soothe and calm her. As I recall, Del has said she she was a bitch to train. Jose Espinoza rode her most, though he forgot his work papers the day of the Martha Washington and the MJC wouldn't let him ride so Rick Wilson picked up the mount. Carroll reminded me Belmont Week when I updated him on Sumwon's progress that Molly took to the grass when they came to Saratoga after he breezed her on it as a bit of a lark at at the Oklahoma.
THE TG NUMBER AND WHAT MAY LIE AHEAD
The Thoro-Graph figure SWLY received for last Wednesday's run is outstanding news. As a slight new top
off the 45 day break and on the Poly, it gives an indication that Sumwon has another forward move in her yet to come, as she was not at an absolute fitness peak for the effort. Chuck estimates that she was likely about 80-85% fit for Wednesday. Given her pattern off the KEE-CD-CD string of starts, there is reason to believe she may deliver top efforts in her next start or two. After that, Chuck has indicated that he would like to give her a 75-90 day break for the late fall before starting again at Fair Grounds with a winter campaign to begin her 4yo year.
COULD WE HAVE BEEN MORE FORTUNATE?
Our luck landing Sumwonlovesyou as the first Dee Tee acquisition is frankly beyond belief. As has been said repeatedly, it is marker of Chuck's savvy as a bloodstock evaluator and horseman. And as I've also discussed, my own pleasure and satisfaction of being involved with a daughter of Mysterious Moll is extensive. My interest in the game was galvinized by being around the Pont St. gang and Del Carroll at that time, so having any role in this particular horse's racing career is especially serendipitous...
Seeing how much fun everyone is having being a part of Sumwon is exactly what Chuck and I were hoping for with the formation of Dee Tee. While it could 'go south' at the drop of a hat, I'd like to think that all following her exploits have already received more excitement and experience than anticipated. I certainly have..
