ECT is a valuable treatment tool in the battle against severe and chronic depression and the application is humane, the patient given muscle relaxers and anesthetic so there are no violent convulsions and/or injury. Lobotomies are banned in the US but when they were used produced a flat affect but didn't reduce patients to zombies...they were often performed outpatient in a doctors office.
