CECIL TO BYPASS EPSOM
Monday 21st May 2007
Sergeant Cecil will head straight for the Gold Cup Royal Ascot on June 21 after connections opted to swerve an engagement in the Coronation Cup.
The popular stayer produced a career best performance at York on Friday, winning the Yorkshire Cup under a Group One penalty for trainer Rod Millman.
And while the Devon handler wants to try the eight year old at 12 furlongs at some stage of the season, Epsom in 11 days' time will not figure on the agenda.
"He's come back from York in great form, which isn't surprising considering that he won with a bit to spare, but we're going to give him an easy time for a couple of weeks," he told the Racing Post.
"We've decided to wait for the Gold Cup and although we're keen to try 'Cecil' over a mile and a half at the top level, plans for that will have to wait.
"We want him to be at his very best in the Gold Cup and there are plenty of races for him after Ascot.
"We may also think about going overseas with him later on, but we're not going to sacrifice races closer to home before we get to that stage.
"Which target we choose will depend on how the opportunities fit in and how the races look to be shaping up."
