If you watch the video of Gallant Man the Shoe's move does not appear to change his stride or speed at all. And why should it? Looks bad but not by the laws of physics...

Turning in the saddle should do something to the horses momentum both sideways and backwards. DIdnt the last race, Borel turned back and SS switched leads?
