Last year's Belmont S. (G1) winner JAZIL (Seeking the Gold) will try turf for the first time in Friday's $200,000 Elkhorn S. (G3), the closing-day feature at Keeneland. The grassy 1 1/2-mile affair has attracted an overflow field of 13, including one also-eligible.
Conditioned by Kiaran McLaughlin, Jazil first burst into prominence with his explosive runner-up effort in last year's Wood Memorial S. (G1). After rallying from last to dead-heat for fourth in the Kentucky Derby (G1), the bay overcame a troubled start to capture the Belmont by 1 1/4 lengths. Jazil was sidelined for the rest of his three-year-old campaign, then returned in January to finish second in an allowance/optional claiming event at Aqueduct. In a similar contest at Gulfstream Park the following month, he was runner-up to the impressive Corinthian (Pulpit). |
