VORTEX TO SHIP FROM ENGLAND FOR TRIPLE BEND

Vortex, a well-traveled 7-year-old gelding from England, will make his United States debut in the $300,000 Triple Bend Invitational Handicap here next Sunday. The Grade I test will be run at seven furlongs.

Vortex will be flown to Los Angeles from Amsterdam on Monday and clear quarantine here on Wednesday, according to racing secretary Martin Panza.

The English-bred son of Danehill has won 14 of 43 starts and earned $416,319. Five of his victories have been at seven furlongs.

Vortex, trained by Gay Kelleway, scored his biggest victory in the Group III Criterion Stakes at seven furlongs on turf at Newmarket last year. He has been particularly effective on all-weather and dirt tracks, with 10 victories in 17 starts.

Although most of his races have been in England, Vortex has traveled to Sweden for three races and Japan for one. Vortex was assigned 115 pounds for the Triple Bend.

The race is also expected to attract Northern California invaders Siren Lure (121) and Trickey Trevor (119), defending champion Unfurl The Flag (116) and 2003 runner-up Publication (118).

Trainer Art Sherman said from Bay Meadows that Siren Lure, winner of the Los Angeles Handicap in his last start here on May 13 and the Robert Kerlan Handicap on the turf here last year, was shipped here Friday and would work on Tuesday. He also said that Carthage, another crack sprinter in his barn high weighted at 122 for the Triple Bend, would pass and wait for the Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said from Bay Meadows that Trickey Trevor would be shipped south Monday. The 7-year-old horse has come a long way since he won his only previous start here in November, 2004, and was claimed for $40,000.

Trickey Trevor has won 18 of 36 starts and earned $601,566. He won the Grade II Churchill Downs Handicap in May and finished second to Carthage in the Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint Handicap in his last start on June 4. Scheduled to make his Hollywood Park debut is Battle Won (115), winner of the Churchill Downs Handicap last year. He has recorded a series of works since joining the Mike Mitchell stable here in May.

Trainer Vladimir Cerin worked both Publication, who returned from a two-year layoff with an allowance victory on May 20, and Thunder Touch (112) five furlongs each in an identical 1:00.60.

Prorunner (113), another invitee, worked five furlongs in a bullet :58.60 for trainer Molly Pearson.
