Randall,
I've had squirrels, both grey and red, in two houses I've owned. I also had a flying squirrel in another attic in a different house.
By far, the reds do the most damage. But the greys, if they're nesting will bring all kinds of problems. Think insects, sqirrel poop.
Anyway, you could go the "gentle" way...get a have-a-heart trap, take them miles away...
I didn't do that.
First, walk around your house, look at the eves, soffit, down spouts. Find where they are getting in. Their entry hole can be very small and well hidden.
You need to get some metal (galvanized) and get up on a ladder, nail it over the hole.
Second, a cat (at least mine) won't tackle a squirrel. Mice, yes.
Third, get a few conibear (size #1) traps at your local sporting goods store, or go to a small (mom and pop) hardware and get some rat traps. They look like big mouse traps. Set in your attic, on the roof near the entry hole.
For bait, I use peanut butter. After you catch one, keep resetting until they don't show up anymore.
The rodents can cause lots of problems...disease, chewed wiring...
Good luck with getting rid of them.
I hope my advice helps you.
