Your hypothesis is that if he'd hard ridden the horse EARLIER the horse runs down LT. But he wasn't hard ridden at all and he still couldn't get by a horse that was being asked before they finished the turn. In other words he HUNGGGGGGGGGGGggg,

If you have a large horse on the outside and a smaller horse on the fence the smaller horse gets intimidated and backs out of the hole no matter how hard the jock rides
