Man, one of my favorite scores of all time was an unraced filly out of Nashua that went off at around 20-1 in the 3rd race at Hialeah back in about 1979.
Maidens, and a short race. Something else I liked about her besides the Nashua-filly connection. It might have been the jockey. In those days, if a jockey by the name of Wayne Crews was on a horse in a short race, the horse ALWAYS deserved a 2nd and 3rd look. Crews came up on the quarter horse tracks and with little notice was the best "gate jockey" in South Florida in those days.
A perfect storm of wagering in those spring days of south Florida.....pre wagering technology.
Anyhow, I had some nice dog track trifecta $$ from the night before, and ended up with a wild $200 on the nose bet on the Nashua filly.
She won of course. Otherwise I wouldn't remember this story 28 years later!
I went and bought a good bottle of liquor with my proceeds, and spent the next three days with the prettiest girl I knew in Fort Lauderdale at the time.
She was a solid favorite.
We ordered in quite a bit that weekend.
