I've only been following the sport since 2004 and found a very fun way to get involved is by participating in online contests. They are free and with luck, could win you money. Plus, having a "rooting" interest in a race always makes it better. It may not be too late to join tvgfantasy.com (Derby Trail has a private league too that you can join, PM me and I'll give you the information) DerbyCat is running a contest on this forum for all of the Derby Preps as well and I'm sure she would be happy for another contestant.

I found these websites extremely helpful when I first started to learn:

http://www.equibase.com/ bottom right hand corner of the home page has a scroll down menu for a glossary of racing terms, fractional times etc.

Good tutorial on conformation:

http://www.horsehats.com/Conformation.html

This is the most 'complete' site I've ever come across; trivia, fun & history:

http://www.horse-races.net/

The racing museum:

http://www.racingmuseum.org/

National Thoroughbred Racing Association (and Breeder's Cup history & race replays)

http://www.ntra.com/

Enjoy!
