Time Squared and that SA 5th was talked about a bit the other day in the course of the Selection thread.. This was a very intriguing MSW with a number of potentially important three year olds. Time Squared is out of the Broman's AP Indy mare Indy Glory, herself out of the Cox's Ridge mare Immerse. Indy Glory is a full sister to Stephen Got Even and the NYB juvy stakes winner Grand Merger (Maid of the Mist).

Biancone had told Ric Hammerle, the Director of Racing at SA, that he was entering Time Squared Saturday strictly to get the requisite Derby Voodoo "two year old start" into the colt. He expected nothing special from him, but has high hopes for this year with the son of FuPeg.

The race wasn't necessarily "slow", as there was very little speed signed on, and while comparing this group to claimers that ran earlier on the card won't tell you much, they went a lot quicker than the older maiden taggers that opened the day. More important was the way in which Time Squared cut out his fractions in the race...

:24.3 (:24.3).. :24.4 (:49.2).. :24.2 (1:13.4).. :30.2 (1:44.1)..

THAT is what was impressive. For a horse to run :24 quarters so evenly in his debut, is a GREAT sign for down the road, and particularly for Derby success. There are few Rose Run indicators more positive than the ability to run like that while closing well. And 30.2 for the last 2.5f is ultra sharp in a route debut. Five quarter miles at a :24.2 clip gives you 10f in 2:02.0, and that wins a lot of Derbies.

When the Big Froggie turns the screws on this colt, things will get interesting, and I applaud the fact that he didn't push this April foal before he was ready. While no one would question Biancone's overall ability as a trainer, he does have a history of demolishing youngsters.

I see "Giacopelli" listed as part of the ownership with Fab Oak, Biancone's childhood pal Fabien Ouaki (Whywhywhy) and top NY breeder Lew Lakin. If it's Paul Giacopelli, who has several horses with Sciacca, I know him pretty well. Will find out if it is and what's up next for this $1,050,000 NY bred...
