I think it's a no-win situation. There will be a lot of angry people no matter what is done. If he is put to death, many of the Sunnis will be extremely angry and and most radical Muslims in other countries will be angry too. On the other hand, if the US put its foot down and would not allow him to be executed, the Shiites in Iraq and the Kurds would be furious.
